Abstract : Damping materials used in the construction of submarines and surface ships were tested. The latest treatment proposed by Monsanto, identified as MRC-OG4, is a graphite filled copolymer of vinyl-chloride and vinyl-acetate. MRC-OG4 is flame-resistant and thermoplastic. It was found that this material with 3 parts of ELA could be calendered and plied up to the desired thickness without molding. The damping characteristics of 0.57 inch thick slabs of modified MRC-OG4, bonded to 3/8 inch steel bars with an epoxy adhesive, were measured at 30 deg., 35 deg., 50 deg., 65 deg., and 80 deg. F over the frequency range of about 0.5 keps to about 13 keps. Results obtained are presented. Optimum damping was observed at about 65 deg. F. (Author, modified-PL).
