Abstract : Work was primarily directed towards arranging, aligning and combining existing instruments in arrays to provide a more readable and understandable display. The present program was directed toward the goal of achieving a true allweather flight capability in Navy aircraft. True all-weather capability would mean taking off from some point, performing a mission en route, proceeding to some other point, and landing at that point without the necessity of seeing the ground. Improving pilot performance by simplifying the operation of aircraft data sensing, processing, and display as well as control capability was investigated. The history, philosophy, and design concepts are presented. (Author)
