Abstract : Results are given of a correlation analysis of spaced aerial fading measurements for medium frequency radio waves scattered from the D and E regions at a location near to the magnetic equator. These results show that there is a sharp increase in the elongation of the diffraction pattern on the ground, in the direction of the earth's magnetic field, for echoes from above 90 Km. Consideration of the relative rates of diffusion of irregularities parallel, and perpendicular, to the earth's magnetic field, shows that the height at which the ionosphere might be expected to become appreciably anisotropic with respect to the ambipolar motions of electrons and positive ions is in good agreement with the experimental results.
