Abstract : The development of flexible, solid propellant rocket motor case insulation is discussed. Data are presented for insulation based primarily on butadiene/styrene and butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers. Vulcanizates were compounded using a variety of fillers and filler combinations including salts, resins and fibers. A material was developed which static motor tests show to have promise as a flexible material for case insulation. This material was based on a butadiene/acrylonitrile-phenol furfural-asbestos composition. Other promising materials which are reported are based on two types of liquid butadiene/styrene copolymers and a butadiene/acrylonitrile-polyvinyl chloride blend. (Author)
