Abstract : The purification of steel by electroslag remelting was dependent upon the degree of oxidation of consumable electrodes during melting. The use of nitrogen, argon, as well as a lid on the crystallizer to protect the surface of the melted slag and the tip of the electrode reduced the inclusion of nonmetallic contamination as well as globular metal inclusions which would oxidize readily by contact with atmospheric oxygen. The composition of the slag had little effect on the quantity of nonmetallic inclusions in remelted stainless steel SHKH15SG.
