Abstract : The results are presented of a study of flexible jet extensions for Ground Effect Machines. A relatively simple trunk design can give a considerable increase in the effective clearance height of a jet with only a small loss in stability. An analysis was made of the optimum jet extension configuration and the possible types of materials and fabrication procedures. Two dimensional model tests were carried out with varying jet wall extension lengths, and an optimum arrangement for lift efficiency and stability determined. The most promising technique and method were selected for application to the Navy Hydroskimmer, SKMR-1. A typical section of the proposed jet extension was tested and a comparison made between the original SKMR-1 performance with a flat bottom and with jet extensions. (Author)
