Abstract : Five W-ba e vacuum-arc-cast alloys ere extruded to round bar form, but were found to be extensively cracked. Extremely poor recoveries of sound stock were realized. Subsequent canning of additional extrusion blanks of the same alloys in Mo facilitated the production of sound extruded billets. Attempts to convert the extruded materials to 1/2-in.-diam bar stock by rolling resulted in rupturing of the bars. Seven new heats were vacuum-arc-cast, five to duplicate the earlier ingots and two additional compositions. All of the alloys were prepared for extrusion by canning in Mo. High recoveries of extruded materials were obtained. Two of the alloys which had sustained low reduction ratios during extrusion could not be converted to 1/2-in.-diam bar stock by swaging. On the other hand, the billets that had been subjected to heavy reductions during extrusion were successfully swaged to 1/2-in.-diam bar stock with resultant high recoveries. (Author)
