Abstract : Two vehicles were driven a total of 1,416 mi in a total of 291.8 engine operating hours. One vehicle traversed 635 and the other 781 mi. The vehicles negotiated 55% slopes covered with snow up to 36 inches deep while carrying a 3/4 ton load. The vehicles ascended a 50% slope with no load and while carrying a 1-ton load, attained maximum speeds of 40 mph on a cross-country course covered with light snow. During the exercise, the vehicles performed without difficulty in ambient temperatures ranging from +25 to -42 F. Turning movements were executed successfully on a 40% slope with the vehicles unloaded and while carrying a 3/4 ton load. Vehicles also operated on 50% side slopes. A maximum speed of 47 mph on flat hard packed snow in the unloaded condition was attained. Vertical obstacles two ft high, snow banks, ditches and draws were traversed without difficulty. During cross-country operation, fuel consumption averaged 5 mi per gallon unloaded and 4.4 mi per gallon with the vehicle carrying a 3/4 ton load. Deceleration stops from 35 mph on hardpacked snow carrying a 1-ton load were accomplished in 31 to 36 feet. While unloaded the stopping distance was 41 to 43 ft. The turning radius was 18 ft to the right and 16 ft 4 in to the left; radius of turns was measured on the outside. (Author)
