Abstract : A preliminary study of infrared emission from shock heated gases was carried out, using a gold doped germanium detector. These measurements gave lower limits to the transition probabilities for the uptake of vibrational energy on collision, but the correct values are certainly no more than double those quoted. The values in the vicinity of 1000 K are: HCl, 3x1/100,000; HBr, 2.3x1/100,000; CO2(v3)2.1x1/100,000; and N2O(v3), 1.8x1/100,000. (Author)
