Abstract : The solubility and electrical effects of cation substituents, anion substituents, interstitial solutes and deviations from stoichiometry in WSe2 and, to a lesser extent, in MoSe2 were studied quantitatively. The p-type composition W.99Ta.01Se2, continues to be the best thermoelectric material in this system, with a Figure of Merit of 0.0007 -3/deg at 600 C. Hall effect measurements and related data for Ta-doped WSe2 can be interpreted consistently on the basis of a simple extrinsic semiconductor model. A re-examination of encapsulation problems with W led to the decision to use prefabricated ceramic tubes with ferrous metal end caps for protection against degradation at high temperatures, rather than Sauereisen cement coatings.
