Abstract : A new blood pump powered by compressed air and controlled by a fluid amplification system has been developed by the Army's Diamond Ordnance Fuze Laboratories and the Division of Clinical Surgery at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The pump is constructed of a luciteblock housing with an inner compressible, disposable ventricle made of polyvinyl chloride. The complete unit is small, simple in design, and low in production cost. There are no cleaning or sterilization problems concerned with its use. A description of fluid amplification and the pump and its operation has been presented. (Author)
