Abstract : A study was made of some of the systems involved in measuring the concentrations of fission products in the air at ground level and a direct comparison made of radioactivity results reported from each of the systems on replicate samples made at the same time and place over an extended period. Some information on the filtration characteristics of the various filter media is also included. The experimentally determined relative radioactivity concentrations of identical air samples from which interconversion factors can be derived for directly comparing any of the systems with another are as follows: NRL air monitor, 1.00; U.S. Public Health Service Radiation Surveillance Network, 1.17; Canadian Air Monitoring Network, 1.82; NRL 80th Meridian Network, 2.07. These ratios are based on the sampling of a known volume of air; there is presently some degree of uncertainty as to the actual volume of air sampled at the various field sites of the three operating networks.
