Abstract : Data on a sample of officers in scientific and engineering assignments were used to evaluate the role of selected educational variables as predictors of effectiveness ratings. Results, based on the solution of a series of multiple regression problems and the computation of mean effectiveness scores for subgroups of officers with different characteristics, show that variance in the ratings can be partially explained in terms of educational information on the ratees. Educational data compare favorably with data from the military record as information which can be used to foretell effectiveness scores. Data on educational level, rather than data on the completion of a designated college curriculum, are the aspects of educational information which generally serve to identify officers who will receive the higher effectiveness ratings.
