Abstract : The new draft of 'Norms for Artificial Lighting' proposes to exclude paragraph 9 of Chapter II-C.6, 1959, which authorizes, provided that conditions for the limitation of glare are observed, a 50% reduction in the norms governing the lighting of open areas in industrial establishments and in railroad stations. At present, this authorization is widely used in the design of exterior lighting of railroad stations, particularly when light fixtures are employed. Exclusion of this paragraph from the new draft of the 'Norms' is, generally, valid, since its purpose is the improvement in the quality of lighting installatidard of illumination -- 5 lux -- in the arrival, departure, and marshalling yards of large railroad yards; this is particularly the case when light fixtures are employed that are suspended from flexible lateral cables spanning the tracks. Maintenance of this standard without reduction will result in unjustifiable increases in capital expenditures for the lighting installations and increased electric power consumption. (Author)
