Abstract : INCONEL-X and Mo (pure) substrates were coated with 0.025, 0.050 and 0.075 in. thicknesses of Al2O3, ZrO2 and WC. Generalized conclusions resulted from rocket blast impingement using gas velocities of 8000 ft/sec, impingement distances of 5.1 and 12.7 nozzle diameters (1.18 in. exit diameter), and 3000 to 4000 F temperatures. In these tests the resistance of ZrO2 and Al2O3 to erosion and ablation appeared equal for similar thicknesses and temperatures, but the ZrO2 0.075 in. thick coatings displayed the greater tendency to chip and fail under these conditions. The ZrO2 coatings exhibited hairline crazing at 3700 to 4000 F, and the Al2O3 tended to flow at these temperatures. ZrO2 did not perform satisfactorily on Mo and the performance of Al2O3 was not given in Mo terms. (Author)
