Abstract : Networks combining lossless transmission lines of commensurate lengths with lumped elements, especially lumped reactive elements, are investigated. The properties of the network functions encountered are expressed in terms of properties of associated functions of two independent complex variables. The emphasis is on the lossless driving point impedance and the twovariable reactance property that arises. The study of the two-variable reactance property yields a necessary and sufficient coefficient test for this property. It is found that a given expression can be tested for the twovariable reactance property by a finite number of rational operations on the coefficients of the expression. For screening given expressions for the two-variable reactance property, simple necessary conditions are presented. For generating two-variable reactance functions, simple sufficient conditions are presented. In order to synthesize a given two-variable rational expression, operations corresponding to network extractions are presented. It is also shown that a method of Lunnelli for lumped elements has a generalization for two-variable networks. Examples are given of equivalent two-variable networks, derived by these synthesis techniques. (Author)
