Abstract : A method of measuring coupling between an energy source and a material has been develope , and some preliminary tests have been performed. Elastic waves were introduced into metal and Ple igl s ro s by impac ing one end of each kind of rod with steel sphere. The strain pulses produced in the rods were sensed by resistance strain gages cemented to the sides of the rods and recorded on an oscilloscope. The respective pe k strains, pulse durations, peak stresses, momenta, and energies of the strain pul es were then related to the respective mass densities, specific acoustic resis nce an Young' modulii in order to gain some familiarity with the parameters th t co trol coupling. Excellent correlation was found between the momentum in the pulse and the Young's modulus of the material. Reasonably good correl tion was found with several of he o her parameters. However, the results of the te s indica e that the technique, whil having some merit for the study of coupling between impacting spheres and long rods, does not appear particul rly useful for the study of coupling between explosives and rocks.
