Under warm-tropical conditions of high water temperature various species of coralline alga of the genera Porolithon, Go ioli o , Lithophyllum, e c , combine growth forces wit num rou calcareous imals, p cially coral , to for ''coral'' reef . Gro th of t ese reefs is primarily con roled by t c men ing action of the calcareous algae on the reef margin, and t es algae are char c eri tic lly inhabitants of highly oxygenated waters (apparently ue to high oxygen requirements for d rk-hour r spiration . Fur ermore, t e e c lc reous algae ar no t all resistan o desicc tion and require co stant wetting by surf and pray for survival. (Author)
