Abstract : Two candidate monopropellants, propargyl nitramine and propargyl nitrate, have been evaluated. Density, heat of combustion, shock sensitivity, thermal stability, and vapor pressure at several temperatures have been determined. Propargyl nitrate is thermally stable at 50 C (122 F). Although the pressure-time curve for propargyl nitrate at 70 C (158 F) levels off after 20 hours, the physical appearance of the monopropellant indicates that polymerization has occurred. It is explosively unstable at 160 C (320 F). Propargyl nitramine is thermally stable at 50 C but relatively unstable at 70 C (158 F). The relative shock sensitivity for propargyl nitrate and propargyl nitramine using n-propyl nitrate as a standard is: Propargyl nitramine < n-propyl nitrate<propargyl nitrate.
