Abstract : Based upon simplifying assumptions which neglect saturation, rate processes, scattering losses, etc., there is derived a set of scaling relations that apply to an amplifying stage of a travelingwave optical maser. Stage characteristics are compared for ruby and Nd(3+)-glass. General as well as specific numerical relations are included for gain, characteristic length, number of elements, energy output per element, as well as normalized volume and weight. Graphs are included for a practical range of the pertinent variable. These data indicate that (a) very high ion concentrations are not necessarily desirable, and (b) Nd(3+)-glass has significant advantages over ruby in a high power travelingwave optical maser, especially when reliability and cost are considered.
