Abstract : A program for developing a movable nozzle design applicable to a maximum range of motor sizes initiated the development of the Lockseal assembly. This assembly attaches a conventional submerged nozzle to a rocket motor mounting flange. It is a toroidal structure consisting of alternate laminations of rubber and a reinforcing material such as steel. Each laminate is a frustrum of a hollow sphere. The top and bottom rubber laminates of the stack are rigidly affixed to the nozzle and the motor mounting flange. Angular nozzle deflection is accomplished by shear deformation of the elastomeric members in the seal. Effort during the report period was primarily directed toward the design and fabrication of the bench test Lockseal assemblies and the design of a pressure test vessel for testing of the seals. Considerable material testing was performed in order to select an elastomer with the most desirable physical properties for incorporation in the Lockseal assembly. (Author)
