Abstract : This document is an excerpt from the final report now in preparation under this contract. While it covers the choice of pulse forms for classification in a general way, it also addresses itself to the question of the relative value in obtaining highlight detail of short CW pulses and wide-band, long pulses, such as the linear FM sweep. Two points are made: (1) with a short CW pulse a single sampling of the echo structure in a single sample of noise is obtained; and (2) with a long FM sweep an independent sampling of the echo is observed in a new sample of background every 1/B seconds, where B is at least as large as the bandwidth of the transmitted pulse. In order to obtain 'clean' highlight details with a short pulse, either good signal-to-noise ratios must be available or a number minimize the effects of the background.
