Abstract : An ablation measuring device designed to measure the intensity of radioactivity as a function of material removed during the ablation process has been developed and evaluated. The prime objective of the evaluation was to determine the validity of the measuring device by comparing the average ablation rate obtained using the conventional pre- and post-exposure mechanical measurements with that obtained with the new device. An additional objective was to determine the time at which the ablation process actually began and ended under the simulated re-entry test conditions. A single test was made using Micarta grade 259-2 as the nose cone material. This method of measuring ablation rate appears valid, since the average ablation rate of 0.0299 in./sec obtained with the new device compares favorably with the rate of 0.0295 obtained using conventional mechanical measurements. Ablation began approximately 0.6 sec after the protective shield cleared the model axis and ended 0.3 sec before the shield was replaced. Detailed results of the tests are included.
