Abstract : The OF radical has been synthesized by low temperature matrix photolysis of N2O and F2. Gas phase synthetic attempts to use the OF radical generated by irradiation of N2O and sources of atomic fluorine such as F2, NF3O and N2F4 have not yielded any products of interest. Attempts to prepare NOF compounds by matrix reactions of OF and O2F radicals with nitrogen-containing substrates led to formation of N=O and N-F bonds. Matrix reactions of ClF, ClF3 and ClF5 with O2, F2 and OF-containing materials have produced several new radicals and compounds. Reaction of O3 with ClF5 yielded new infrared bands that fit well for the desired ClF5O which apparently decomposes readily to ClF3 and OF2. Mass spectrometric studies of gas phase photolysis of OF2 have indicated a short-lived OF species. Low temperature EPR has shown that the same radical, most probably the O2F, produces the signals obtained in O2F2, O3F2, O4F2 and photolyzed OF2. (Author)
