Abstract : During this quarter, the ray-optic analysis of the MORU was completed, from which the height-to-width ratio of the system window was selected as 6.00 to 5.00. For this ratio, the cross section at 35 deg from boresight is predicted to drop 5.0 db down from the boresight value in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the external array cylinder, a worst case, and 1.7 db in the plane perpendicular to the above plane, a best case. The external array element was chosen as a cavity mounted helix, for which axial ratios of less than 3 db on the beam maximum have been measured over a frequency range of 2.8 to 3.2 gc. Over this same range, and over the 3 db beamwidth, the axial ratio did not exceed 4.3 db. Work remains to be done on impedance matching and final mechanical design of the antenna element. The transformer-radiator design is about half finished. The transition between a TNC connector and a coaxial line filled with a k = 10 dielectric was completed. It remains to design the loop that couples the high dielectric coaxial region to the circular waveguide region. The absorbing chamber size and configuration was selected and successful casting of the absorbing modules that line the interior of this chamber has begun. (Author)
