Abstract : This report summarizes the work performed during the first quarter of a 12-month program designed to evaluate and characterize the combustion efficiency of MONEX DW, a beryllium-containing monopropellant, in a liquid injection type engine at a nominal 250 lb thrust level. Initial checkout tests of the monopropellant engine system were performed with MONEX A, an aluminum-containing monopropellant. Injector flow tests were conducted with MONEX A using solid cone spray nozzles. Satisfactory propellant ignition was not obtained with a variety of pyrotechnic igniters under the test conditions. In a series of six tests, smooth hypergolic ignition of MONEX A was obtained with a chlorine trifluoride start slug. Sustained monopropellant combustion of MONEX A was demonstrated in three tests of chamber pressures greater than 630 psia, however, monopropellant combustion was not sustained at a chamber pressure of 250 psia.
