Abstract : In the initial work on electrostatic VT fuzes, which was directed toward the CWS-5 stick bomb application, the feasibility of the system was established. Work was then begun on the development of a fuze for the 81-mm mortar shell. Satisfactory operation has been obtained in fair weather. Burst heights were in the range of 3 to 5 ft with one-tube circuits, and 8 to 15 ft with two-tube circuits. Concurrent with the work on specific fuzing applications, fundamental studies were made to determine the electrical and geometrical parameters, to determine optimum circuitry, to develop cold-cathode tubes, to develop methods for electrostatic charging of shells, and to develop test procedures. Methods of preventing malfunction in the rain are being investigated. Preliminary development work has also been done on an electrostatic contact fuze. Fuzes have operated satisfactorily in initial field tests. Operability in rain and against various targets is being investigated. (Author)
