Abstract : The objective of this contract is to conduct theoretical and experimental investigations resulting in the demonstration of beryllium hydride (LMH-2) solid propellants delivering in excess of 280 lbf-sec/lbm at standard conditions. During this quarter four high performance candidate LMH02 formulations were tested in nominal 15-lb motors. All four formulations achieved the target goal delivering in excess of 280 lbf-sec/lbm at standard conditions. The highest average delivered impulse of 281.8 lbf-sec/lbm was achieved with the VIZ formulation containing 19% LMH-2. These delivered impulses are believed to be the highest achieved to date from LMH-2 fueled solid propellants. From motor scaling relations, delivered impulses at the 285 level can now be projected. Additional consideration was given to optimizing propellant performance and achieving the ultimate potential from LMH-2. Work continued to define the problems associated with LMH-2 lot-to-lot variations. A basic incompatibility with one or more LMH-2 contaminants coupled with adsorbed air is believed responsible for low-density grains with some LMH-2 lots. Both vacuum baking or water washing were effective posttreatments to eliminate low-density grains. (Author)
