Abstract : The presence of low velocity detonations (LVD) in the difluoroamino compounds (1,2-DP, 2,2-DP, and IBA) has been confirmed. A correlation between LVD velocity and witness plate damage has been obtained. 2,2-DF was found to have a substantially higher LVD velocity than either 1,2-DP or IBA. Stripped mirror experiments conducted with tetranitromethane (TNM) and nitromethane (NM) mixtures to define the shock wave interactions when LVD occurs were not successful because of insufficient lighting. Further experimentation to observe the Mach zone during LVD is planned. The high velocity failure diameter of IBA has been established at about 9.5 mm. Streak camera studies have shown the presence of dark waves during failure if IBA, and a program to investigate their significance to the theory of failure is being continued.
