Abstract : Long-term storage stability tests with slurries of beryllium hydride and organometallic liquid carriers continued. Systems producing gas in the range of 0.00006 - 0.0001 cc/lb-min at 90 F include: Et3Al, Et2AlH, Et2Be and Me3Al. A system containing dimethylaluminum hydride is producing gas in the range of 0.00011 - 0.0002 cc/lb-min under these conditions. The complex Be(Et2BH2)2 evolves gas at the rate of 0.0004 - 0.00045 cc/lb-min even in the absence of beryllium hydrides. Light has no effect on this rate. Initial gassing is minimized by baking beryllium hydride at 130 C and 1mm for 23 hrs, and use of helium to break the vacuum. Aluminum coating beryllium hydride further reduces the surge of initial gas. Argon was also found effective as a pretreatment to prevent initial gassing; however, these samples produced foam when mixed with active liquid carriers. Ansul ether 181 is useful for gelling organometallic liquids. Various commercial gellants proved less effective. Systems containing beryllium hydride slurried with beryllium- and aluminum-containing organometallic liquids were found to solidify slowly on standing. Syntheses of the following compounds were attempted unsuccessfully: Be(B3H8)2, Be(EtAlH3)2, Al(EtBH3)3. Complex mixtures, rather than pure products were obtained.
