Abstract : Additional studies of the matrix photochemical isomerization of OClO to ClOO have produced a new band at 1/434.8 cm which is related to that previously observed at 1/1415 cm and believed to be due to an intermediate in the isomerization. A new computer program has been devised to provide a complete normal coordinate analysis of the ClOO radical. Matrix reactions of ClO2 and O3 failed to provide evidence for the desired ClO3 radical. Attempts to produce the compound Cl2O2 in low temperature matrix from reactions of the ClOO radical and atomic chlorine were unsuccessful. Although matrix reactions of HCl and HBr with O3 produced HOCl and the previously unknown HOBr, attempts to produce the desirable oxidizer HOF from a similar reaction with HF were unsuccessful. It appears that the failure was not due to decomposition of HOF but to the unfavorable thermodynamics involved in its formation. Using the UV-visible spectroscopic technique developed to identify species in low temperature matrices, no bands were observed for the OF radical in the 5000-2200A range on irradiation of OF2 even though it was observed in the infrared at 1/1028 cm in the same matrix experiment. As yet, no EPR evidence for the OF radical in the gas phase has been obtained; a description of the expected OF gas phase EPR spectrum has been worked out. Three new lines in the gas phase EPR spectrum of discharged fluorine agree well with theoretically predicted positions for the fluorine atom. (Author)
