Abstract : Nitryl fluoride and bromine trifluoride have been found to form a 1:1 white, solid complex (NO2(+)BrF4(-)) at ambient temperature. The F19 n.m.r. spectrum of ClF3O has been determined in the gas phase at ambient temperature. Resonances were observed at -276 phi and -317 phi with intensity ratios of the former to the latter of 2. The magnitude of the spin-spin interaction was not resolvable in the present work. Various aspects of the chemistry of Cl-0 species have been examined. Syntheses of Cl2O3 were conducted under static and flow conditions. Study of the new class of complexes of the MF.Cl2O type has been expanded to include the systems RbF-Cl2O, CsF-ClO2, and CsF-ClNO3. The vigorous fluorination of ClO2 proceeded explosively to ClF3 and O2. Chlorine dioxide and nitric oxide were found to react rapidly at low temperature, giving ClNO2 and NO2. The fluorination of FClO2 using corona-discharge activation and ultraviolet radiation activation was investigated. In both instances, the primary reaction observed was the decomposition to ClF and O2 followed by fluorinations of ClF to ClF3 and ClF5.
