Abstract : Investigation of bench-scale continuous pyrolysis units for production of BeH2 was continued. Best results were obtained with a continuous flow stirred pot system; product purities of 93.6 wt % BeH2 were obtained by decreasing ether cleavage. The latter was limited by using a high beryllium alkyl/oil feed ratio. The study of continuous pyrolysis in tubular reactors encountered serious problems, viz. ether cleavage and tube pluggage. Maximum product purity was 70 wt % BeH2. Because of the tubular reactor problems, two types of continuous flow stirred pot reactor systems were investigated. The first system made use of two vessels connected in series. Best results were gotten with the single stirred pot. Physical properties of BeH2 examined for correlation with propellant processability and compatibility were - air adsorption, bulk density, particle porosity and surface area, sedimentation volume and viscosity of inert slurries. Air adsorption measurements showed that BeH2 can adsorb 4-5 cc of dry air per 100 g at 25 C. Porosity of unground BeH2 correlated with mix viscosity, but this relationship failed with ground BeH2. Sedimentation volume of BeH2 in pentane shows promise for predicting processability. Viscosity of BeH2/glycerine slurries was tested with three series of samples. Correlation with propellant mix viscosity was good for one series, poor for the other two. (Author)
