Abstract : Long-term storage stability tests with slurries of beryllium hydride and organometallic liquid carriers continue in progress. Systems producing gas in the range of 0.000008-0.00010 cc/lb min at 90 F contain: Et3Al, Et2AlH, Et2Be, Et3B, Me3Al and B5H9. Systems producing gas in the range of 0.00014-0.00092 cc/lb min at 90 F include: Be(Et3AlH)2, Be(Et2BH2)2, Et4B2H2, Me3Al + dense BeH2 and Et2Be + dense BeH2. Coating BeH2 with aluminum greatly reduces initial gassing and may make the helium bake treatment unnecessary. One such system with Me3Al has not produced detectable amount of gas after an initial small pressure rise and has not solidified after being stored for 3-1/2 months. All liquids tested, except B5H9 and Be(Me3AlH)2 form solid systems after a few days, when mixed with about 30 wt % BeH2. Solidification occurs in the presence or absence of a gelling agent. This effect probably is caused by absorption of the liquid by the solid since the liquid carrier can be recovered by extraction. Klucel is the most effective gelling agent for Et3B that was tested. A new novel liquid carrier, Be(Me3AlH)2, was prepared. It is a non-viscous liquid with a calculated heat of formation of -49.7 plus or minus 12.2 kcal/mole. (Author)
