Abstract : Heterogeneous gels and emulsions are being studied to develop a stable, storable LMH-1/hydrazine propellant. Water content of hydrazine has a major effect on the amount of gas generation in the LMH-1/hydrazine system. Pretreatment of the LMH-1 significantly reduces the amount of gas evolved from the completed propellant. Heterogeneous emulsions with OSH emulsifier have excellent physical integrity, but variations of composition alter the physical properties. Preliminary characterization indicates that the OSH emulsifier is a hydrazide of oleyl sarcosine. Research has been directed toward tailoring a polymeric gelling agent for the LMH-1/hydrazine system based on desired physical and rheological properties. Heterogeneous gels with acrylamide/acrylic acid copolymers have been especially promising due to their excellent physical integrity and cohesiveness. Work with ammonium polyacrylate gellants has shown that a certain chemical structure is advantageous in obtaining desirable gel characteristics. The hydrazine capacity of the gelling agent, the adhesive-cohesive properties of the gel and the rheology of the heterogeneous system can be controlled in this manner. Preliminary rheological tests are presented for thixotropic systems. (Author)
