Abstract : The latest phase of development of an inertial guidance system based on the conservation of linear momentum in a ball bouncing between parallel plates is described. In this phase, a laboratory inertial sensing system consisting of a single axial mode bounce cell which is automatically servo operated for sensing motions in two horizontal axes was developed. The system performance was examined and characterized in terms of its accelerometer response. Noise sources were explored and their effect on the system performance are evaluated. A single cell system is under development for longer distance measurement (outside of the laboratory). The possible suitability of a complete three cell sensing system for Naval applications is evaluated. (Author)
