Abstract : Measurements were made of propagation rates of spherical combustion waves in gaseous explosive mixtures, in 65 cm. idameter thin-walled rubber balloons and in a 40 cm. diameter steel bomb. The reults of these experiments show that (1) the detonation induction distances in acetyleneoxygen mixtures are inversely proportional to the ignition energy, (2) for a given ignition energy, the detonation induction distances, for acetyleneoxygen mixtures containing more than 24% but less than 48% acetylene by volume, are practically independent of the mixture ratio, (3) combustion waves of all acetylene-oxygen mixtures were initially overdriven no matter how they were ignited, and (4) the propagation rates of stabilized spherical detonation waves were practically indentical with the linear propagation rates observed in long tubes.
