Abstract : The study shows that it is possible to describe the geomagnetic field with less harmonic coefficients than heretofore used without reducing the accuracy of the approximation because of their smallness and subsequent reduction with increasing altitude. Further, a method of detecting poorly defined harmonic coefficients is set forth, as well as a brute force method of improving these coefficients. (Author)
