Abstract : Anal trials were conducted to establish suitable hot-cold forging procedures for 300 M, HP 9-4, D6AC, 4340, AM-335, and H-11 steels. Using these procedures, screening studies were completed to select the three most promising steels for further investigation. The steels chosen were D6AC, H-11, and 4340. These will be examined for the effect of process variables on mechanical properties. D6AC and H-11 steels exhibited hardness improvements of from 4 to 6 Rockwell C units when hot-cold forged to 60 per cent reduction at 1000 F, as compared with conventional treatment; the improvement in 4340 steel was only about 2 to 3 Rockwell C units. Smaller hardness improvements were obtained when hot-cold forging was conducted at temperatures several hundred degrees higher. (Author)
