Abstract : Most strength and related properties of small clear specimens of mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) from two locations in Oregon were determined to be slightly lower than the species averages based on previous comparable evaluations of material from Montana and Alaska. This is more noticeable for green wood than for wood at 12 percent moisture content. Consideration of all available data indicates that standard strength properties of mountain hemlock are generally comparable to those of western hemlock (T. heterophylla), with the possible exception of the lower average modulus of elasticity for mountain hemlock.
