Abstract : An approximate method is developed for predicting the deflections of the footings of a buried arch subjected to a blast wave traveling along the surface. Results from the theory are compared with measured values from Operation Plumbbob Structure 3.3a. The influence of the dominant parameters is discussed. It is shown that duration of loading is exceedingly important in governing the magnitude of footing deflections. The theory is presented in a form suitable for use in the design office. (Author)
