Abstract : Tis study presents the findings of a year of field work in Portugal and Angola. The author attempts to describe and expain the patterns of settlement and subsistence of the farmer-herders and neighboring African peoples who live on the Huila Plateau of southwestern Angola. A histori cal background of the occupation and colonization of this area by Europeans supplements this study. (Author)
