Abstract : A procedure is described for measuring the ratio of association rate constants for Lewis acids with bases. A static system is used in which thorough mixing of the reacting gases is assured by rapid stiring (a turbine operating at 1000-1500 rpm). The necessary experimental parameters are obtained by infrared analysis of the initial mixtures and residual gases. Relative rates can be determined as a function of the temperature. The problem of selective absorption of the residual amines on the powders of the salts generated during the reaction is examined. To select those pairs of bases to which this technique may be applied, gas phase titrations of various amines with boron trifluoride were carried out in an auxiliary system. Only NH3 and N(CH3)3 gave titration curves which indicate that no significant adsorption took place. (Author)
