Abstract : Several recent papers on the lubrication of rolling contacts have been reviewed with particular emphasis on the effect of operating conditions and surface microgeometry on the endurance of lubricated rolling surfaces. Testing in this report period was conducted with the rolling four ball configuration. The detection of lubricant films between the rolling balls in a four ball tester by means of electrical conductivity measurements was continued. Experimentation with the rolling four ball tester using radiotracer wear measurement techniques was conducted with sets of run-in balls. The use of run-in balls provided a stabilized rolling surface and reliable and repeatable data. A curve of progressive wear vs. speed was obtained showing that at high speed there is negligible wear, and that the wear rate increases drastically (though still in the microgram range) with decrease of speed.
