Abstract : An investigation in the development of a cast aluminum 81mm mortar baseplate is described. Three casting processes were investigated, namely, an aluminum permanent mold process, a semi-permanent mold process, and a chilled Croning shell mold process. The effects of chill location on microstructure and mechanical properties are described. It is shown that the effect of chills varies with location. However, they proved to be effective over only a short distance. Three alloys are considered. Their reaction to chilling and various heat treatments are described. Optimum results are shown for A356 with the chilled shell mold process. (Author)
