Abstract : The results are presented of a study made on the way in which the horizontal pattern of a vertical dipole antenna changes when dielectric cylinders of square, rectangular, circular and elliptical cross section are placed near the antenna. The work of Rhodes, Wait and Yeh on the theory of scattering made posible the theoretical solution of the problem of an infinitely long line source near a dielectric cylinder of either circular or elliptical cross section. Several of these theoretical patterns are presented. Theoretical and experimental patterns are compared. These comparisons show that the circular cylinder solution is a good approximation to the square cylinder of finite length and the elliptical cylinder solution is a good approximation to the rectangular cylinder of finite length, when the largest cross section dimension of the cylinder is of the order of one or two wavelengths. Thus, a method was found of predicting the patterns when certain cylinders with square corners are placed near a dipole antenna. The circular cylinder problem is outlined. The complete solution of the elliptical cylinder problem is presented. (Author)
