Abstract : Radiation heating measurements were obtained for several aerospace structural materials. Heating measurements were obtained throughout the following five configurations: (1) 4 inches of T-61 weldable aluminum, (2) 4 inches of Inconel-X, (3) 4 inches of 6% borated polyethylene, (4) 4 inches of 6% borated polyethylene preceded by l inch of lead, and (5) 4 inches of 6% borated polyethylene preceded by 1/4 inch of boral preceded by 1 inch of lead. Gamma ray and neutron dosimetry measurements were taken by means of a 4-cc ion chamber, gamma-ray chemical dosimeters, sulfur pellets, and gold foils. Heating rates were calculated for Configurations 1 through 4, and both measured and calculated data for all configurations are presented in graphic and tabular form. A method of correcting for heat leakage in the borated polyethlene transducer is outlined, and the required empirical parameters, obtained from a bake-oven experiment, are given along with suggested changes which should be incorporated in future experiments of this type.
