Abstract : The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of using biochemical fuel cells to convert naturally occurring materials into electrical energy. The ureolytic activity of B. pasteurii was investigated as a function of temperature in the range from 25 to 60 C. The temperature for optimum activity was found to be 40 C. The electro-oxidation of hydrogen and ammonia, two products of potentially useful biochemical reactions, was investigated under conditions compatible with the biological phase. The electrochemical performance of the B. pasteurii-urea system was investigated using dispersed suspensions of the bacterium. The performance of this anode was evaluated as a function of temperature and of B. pasteurii concentration. (Author)
