Abstract : The transverse circulation in a real cold front caused by variations in geostrophic wind and temperature along the frontal zone was studied. A strong, direct circulation, with air on the warm side ascending and on the cold side descending, was found in the upper parts of the front. A weak, direct circulation, almost separated from the upper one, was found in the lower levels. According to the circulation picture the cold front was nearly vertical in its lower parts, but was slanting heavily towards colder air in its upper parts. (Author)
