Abstract : The studies of the four process categories (material removeal, addition, displacement and modification) continued along two lines: (1) Experiments to validate new process concepts were performed and experiment designs were formulated for material removal processes based on rapid oxidation, severe embrittlement, and cavitation erosion; (2) studies of fundamental principles that may play a role in future processes were continued, with emphasis on the role in future processes were continued, with emphasis on the role of diffusion and sintering in certain categories of material addition processes. Highlights of the report are the development of a quantitative measure of brittleness that will be useful in evaluating embrittlement machining schemes and initiation of quantum-mechanical studies of material behavior that will be applicable to manufacturing research.
